About Applecross Sauna: Our Story & Vision

ABOUT US

We began as a group of friends living in Applecross, passionate about keeping active and healthy in the outdoors.

On a trip to Norway, a few of the group experienced sauna culture and were blown away by how restorative it was. The hot of the sauna and the biting cold of the fjord eased aching muscles, brought energy to the body, and best of all, was a place where new friends were made.

We recognise that northern Scotland is very similar to Scandinavia. We have long, dark winters, wild weather, freezing cold, and a wonderful, breathtaking environment. We felt it was time to embrace our northern roots and bring sauna culture to Applecross.

At the end of 2025, we registered as a Community Interest Company to take forward the sauna development and other projects, including our local Duathlon and plans for a community sports pitch.

We raised funds through local grants, crowdfunding and events to bring our sauna vision to life and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Applecross, or A’Chomraich in Gaelic, meaning ‘The Sanctuary’ – a name that truly captures the essence of this extraordinary corner of the Scottish Highlands. Stretching over 26,000 hectares, this is a landscape of untamed beauty: dramatic craggy mountains, ancient woodlands, crystal-clear rivers, and wild, chilly lochs that meet the rugged coastline. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme, offering an unparalleled sense of peace and remoteness. Our sauna sits right on the water’s edge at Shore Street, a tiny township at the foot of the iconic Bealach na Bà, placing you in the heart of this awe-inspiring wilderness.

As you make your way to our wooden wellness hut, you might encounter a wandering deer, catch sight of a heron fishing in the calming waters of the Inner Sound, or even spot an otter, seals, or dolphins. If you’re truly fortunate, an eagle might grace the skies above. This is more than just a destination; it’s an immersive experience where every turn offers a glimpse of pristine natural beauty. Applecross offers a chance to truly disconnect from the everyday, breathe in the fresh Highland air, and find deep rejuvenation in a setting that feels both ancient and eternally wild.

WILD WELLNESS

We have designed our wood-fired barrel sauna with a full-height glass window to ensure maximum viewing potential. From otters, seals, and deer to majestic sea eagles, the wildlife here is part of the experience and we want you to fully benefit from being immersed in nature, and if you if you are brave enough, we invite you to awaken your senses with a refreshing dip in the water just steps away.
